Building belonging, opportunity and community

We work with Global Majority People to remove barriers, build confidence, and create pathways to belonging.  Our services respond to the practical, emotional, and social challenges people face as they rebuild their lives in a new country, combining immediate support with long-term opportunities for independence and participation.

Our work spans social connection, education, employability, volunteering, youth activities, and adult support, delivered through trusted relationships and strong local partnerships.  We take a holistic, person-centred approach, recognising that integration is not a single step but a journey shaped by language, wellbeing, community, and opportunity.

We provide practical support that meets immediate needs, alongside programmes that build confidence and stability over time.  This includes our Free Shop, which offers clothing, household items, and essentials in a dignified, welcoming environment, reducing financial pressure while creating opportunities for conversation, trust-building, and onward support. Our advice and support services help people navigate healthcare, housing, education, and immigration systems, ensuring no one is left to face complex processes alone.

We create welcoming spaces where people can connect, learn, and thrive, from English classes and skills workshops, to creative and social activities that reduce isolation and strengthen mental wellbeing.  Our volunteering and progression pathways support people to gain experience, develop skills, and build a sense of purpose, while our employability support helps participants move towards work, training, or further education when they are ready.

Our work with children, young people, and families includes youth activities, mentoring, and family-based programmes that nurture resilience, aspiration, and belonging.  These opportunities support educational success, social confidence, and positive peer relationships.

Partnership is central to everything we do.  We work closely with local authorities, the NHS, schools, voluntary and community organisations, and faith and cultural groups to ensure joined-up, effective support and to avoid duplication. Through our hotel engagement and outreach work, we support newly arrived asylum seekers, often among the most isolated,  providing early information, wellbeing support, and pathways into community life.

We also deliver training and outreach to professionals, volunteers, and community groups, sharing insight and lived experience to improve understanding, challenge misinformation, and strengthen inclusive practice across Norwich and Norfolk.

Alongside our year-round programmes, we coordinate Norwich’s annual Refugee Week celebrations, bringing together people with lived experience, artists, schools, community groups, and partners to celebrate culture, creativity, and contribution.  Refugee Week provides a powerful platform for our participants’ voices, strengthens community cohesion, and challenges negative narratives through shared experiences of learning, art, food, and storytelling.

Together, our work builds stronger individuals, stronger communities, and a city where newcomers are not just supported to survive, but empowered to belong and contribute.

Adult Support

We provide holistic, practical support to help Global Majority People navigate life in Norwich with confidence and dignity. Our adult support services include advice and guidance on housing, health, education, employment, volunteering, immigration systems, finances, and accessing local services, alongside English language learning and wellbeing support.

We recognise that many people face multiple barriers at once. Our approach is relational and trauma-informed, ensuring individuals feel heard, supported, and able to make informed choices. Through trusted partnerships with statutory services and the voluntary sector, we help people stabilise their circumstances and move towards independence and belonging.

Youth Projects

Our youth activities create safe, inclusive spaces where young people can build confidence, friendships, and a sense of belonging. Through sports, creative arts, mentoring, trips, and holiday activities, we support young people to develop social skills, resilience, and positive aspirations.

We work closely with families, schools, and youth partners to ensure our programmes complement education and promote wellbeing. Many of the young people we support have experienced disruption or trauma, and our youth work is designed to be fun, empowering, and rooted in care and trust.

Our Free Shop

Our Free Shop provides free, dignified access to clothing, household items, and essentials for people experiencing financial hardship. Open to sanctuary seekers, the shop helps individuals and families meet immediate needs while maintaining choice and dignity.

More than a practical resource, our Free Shop is also a welcoming community space, often acting as a first point of contact for people new to Norwich. Through the Free Shop, we reduce poverty, prevent crisis, and create opportunities to connect people into wider support, volunteering, and community activities.

Refugee Week Norwich

New Routes coordinates the annual Refugee Week Norwich programme, bringing together communities to celebrate the contributions, creativity, and resilience of refugees and people seeking sanctuary. Working in partnership with cultural organisations, artists, schools, funders, and community groups, Refugee Week Norwich includes exhibitions, performances, workshops, shared meals, and public conversations. It is both a celebration and a platform, amplifying our participants’ voices, challenging misconceptions, and fostering compassion, solidarity, and belonging across the city.

Our Timetable

Our weekly activities form the heartbeat of New Routes. These include English classes, employability skills workshops, cooking workshops, relationship workshops, wellbeing groups, community lunches, social activities, creative sessions, and family-friendly spaces that reduce isolation and build relationships.
Open, welcoming, and consistent, our weekly programme helps people establish routine, confidence, and social connection. Activities are shaped by participant feedback and often co-designed with the community, ensuring they remain relevant, inclusive, and responsive to changing needs.

Bespoke Training

We deliver bespoke training for organisations, professionals, and volunteers working with Global Majority People.  Our training draws on lived experience, frontline expertise, and best practice in safeguarding, inclusion, and trauma-informed approaches.

Training topics include cultural competence, working with people seeking asylum, community integration, and responding to vulnerability.  By sharing knowledge and building confidence across sectors, we help create more inclusive services and stronger, more compassionate communities.
