A collaboration between New Routes, Norwich International Youth Project, English+ and local bike CIC Bicycle Links.
This project provides second-hand bikes to refugees and asylum seekers in Norwich.
Following a hugely successful crowdfunding campaign in 2018, the project was funded between 2019 and March 2022 by Norfolk County Council’s Pushing Ahead program. To date over 400 bikes have been given new homes, alongside the necessary safety gear to keep people safe; each Welcome Wheels bike ‘package’ includes a bike, helmet, lights and D-lock.
If you work with someone who is eligible for Welcome Wheels (asylum seeker or recently resettled refugee) and needs a bicycle please get in touch with us to request a referral.
Donations of suitable bikes (mountain or hybrid bikes in fair condition, particularly smaller sizes) are very welcome for this project. Bikes can be donated directly to Bicycle Links for refurbishment, at their King Street shop (NR1 1QH).
Welcome Wheels is currently running with support from The Bishop’s Refugee Fund (Diocese of Norwich), the Social Enterprise Support Fund and donations, including from the Norfolk schools which have participated in a Day of Welcome for Refugee Week 2021 – 2024, and during the city’s annual Refugee Week crowdfunder and generous donations at the ‘give as you can’ events.
