Norwich joined the City of Sanctuary movement on the 13th September 2016 at an inaugural meeting held in Norwich City Hall council chamber. Since then, a thriving network of Schools of Sanctuary and an active steering committee have been established.
Norwich City of Sanctuary is a coalition of local refugee support groups and community representatives that have come together with the aims of:
Supporting Sanctuary Streams in Norwich and the wider area by linking people and organisations around a particular theme, for example, arts, health, education, faith
Establishing the City of Sanctuary Awards scheme in Norwich and act as the awarding body for this by:
a) encouraging groups and organisations to apply for the award
b) assessing applications against our agreed criteria and awarding successful organisations
Celebrating and promoting Norwich as a City of Sanctuary by:
a) organising an annual awards event
b) developing and maintaining a web presence that celebrates and promotes what it happening locally
c) taking opportunities to publicise the Sanctuary movement and local activities and achievements
